About This Blog
Welcome.
I’m Brandon, a 24 year old software developer from Fargo, North Dakota, working at FBS Data Systems. When I’m not at work, I can usually be found on my motorcycle, or doing something out of doors, which varies wildly (just like the weather here).
What I Write About.
I started this blog for several reasons. I’ve always enjoyed writing, and infrequently collecting my thoughts and writing them down seems to help force certain things to gel for me.
I’m passionate about writing software that other people find easy to use and beautiful to look at. I’ve- for reasons I have yet to fully understand-become some kind of a software Quality Evangelist of sorts, and I’ve been spending some time lately trying to understand how many of the formal processes (TDD, mocking, unit testing) fit into dynamic languages that we so often use on the web.
To that end, you can expect to find the following here:
- Software Quality. We, as programmers, have spent the last 60 years trying to crack the Quality nut. I’ll weigh in on some of the more controversial topics around the blogosphere, as well as give some opinions as to what works for me.
- The User Experience. There are so many subtle things that interface designers can do to make an application feel more friendly. Walking the line between beautiful and usable is not always easy, but there’s still some wiggle room. I’ll post examples of what works well, and what doesn’t, as well as offering some opinions along the way of some of the more subtle things that your users will appreciate, but probably never notice.
- What Drives Me. In an industry where most of what you knew 2 years ago is either no longer relevant, or no longer in existence, it’s vital that developers continue learning. Whether it’s pinpointing what your users are really asking for, learning a new language, or enjoying an unplugged hobby in the time when not at work, I’ll share a variety of less-focused posts regarding industry news, and what keeps me interested in learning.
Disclaimer.
I should note that the opinions expressed within are entirely my own. They do not represent the opinions of my employer in any aspect as they may not even be aware of the existence of this content.
I leave the comments open and unmoderated, but I reserve the right to remove any comments that I view as distasteful, unnecessarily hostile, or outlandishly off-topic.
I swear sometimes. I know, it’s a bad habit and somewhat unprofessional, but as a literary device, sometimes it’s unbeatable. I’ll try to keep it clean if you will.
Read. Recommend. Enjoy.
I hope you find reason to come back often, and I’ll try to keep things updated so there’s always some new content here to dig through. I’d love to hear your opinions on content, so please comment, send me an email (bhornseth[at]gmail.com), post responses, etc. After all, differences of opinion are what fuel the internet
